Gosport Residents View Plans For Coastal Defences

On Wednesday (10 February) Gosport residents get their chance to view proposals regards the defence of the coastline which surrounds their Borough, at an exhibition being held at Gosport Discovery Centre.

Residents are being consulted on the draft North Solent Shoreline Management Plan (SMP), which outlines proposals to manage the coastal flooding and erosion risks to the North Solent shoreline for the next 20, 50 and 100 years, and from 2pm to 7pm on Wednesday 10 February Gosport residents will learn about the coastal changes affecting them.

Recommendations for each area fall within one of four policies:

  • Hold the line – maintain or upgrade the level of protection provided by existing defences
  • Advance the line – build new defences seaward of existing defences
  • Managed Realignment – allow retreat of the shoreline with management to control or limit movement
  • No active intervention – not to invest in providing or maintaining defences

Councillor Graham Burgess, Chairman of Community & Environment Board at Gosport Borough Council said: “Surrounded on three sides by water, our coastline offers an attractive landscape for people to enjoy leisure pursuits, as well as being a great place to live and work. However, it’s also a coastline facing change, and it’s vitally important when planning for the future, that we don’t just look at the short term position, but that of the next 100 years.”

“Consultation on this document is a great opportunity for those interested to have their say on how changes should be managed and I would encourage all residents to come along and find out more about it.”
