It’s been busy at this year’s Gosport Summer Playscheme, where over three weeks; staff had in excess of 10,800 children to entertain at the six FREE schemes on offer.
The playschemes, which ran from Monday 26 July to Friday 13 August, were organised by Gosport Borough Council and headed up by Leisure Development Officer, Mark Reynolds. Each scheme provided a wide range of FREE activities for children aged 5 – 11, activities which included arts and craft, sports coaching, bouncy castle and FREE swimming at 3 of the venues. The whole scheme culminated with the annual recycled boat race and end of scheme party.
The Mayor of Gosport, Cllr Roger Allen, and Deputy Mayor Cllr Chris Carter, took time out of their busy schedules to visit this year’s playschemes and, whilst there, judged and selected the top 4 recycled boats made at each scheme. The proud builders of the craft were then invited to compete in the ‘Recycled Boat Race’ which took place on Walpole Park Boating Lake on Thursday 12 August.
“The Recycled Boat Race is a favourite with the children and has become an annual event of the playschemes,” said the Mayor of Gosport, Councillor Roger Allen, who presented prizes to the winners. “The race itself is a joint affair, organised between the Council and Gosport Model Yacht Club, whose members do a sterling job in ensuring the race is run correctly and safely and that nobody falls in the water!”
“The children have a marvellous time and as well as thanking the Gosport Model Yacht & Boat Club; our thanks also go to ASDA, Explosion! Museum and The Arena Group who, together with the Council, donated prizes for the winners. In fact the Council would like to thank everyone involved in this year’s playschemes, the success of which could not have been achieved without the support of the schools, the staff and the local clubs.”
