The Hampshire & IOW Sports Partnership fund a programme called Return 2 Sport, which encourages anyone aged 16 and over to return to a sport they may have played before, or provide them with the opportunity to take up a new sport.
The final of the 10-week sessions in Return 2 Bowls will be held this coming Friday, 27 August from 10.30am – 12.30pm at Forton Bowls Club, with trophies awarded to the overall winner and runner up at approximately 12.15pm.
“This year’s event has been a huge success with up to twenty four people signing up for the 10 week programme,” said Mark Reynolds, the Council’s Leisure Development Officer, who organised the event in partnership with Ian Mulholland and members of Forton Bowl’s Club. “What was nice was that the average age of those wishing to take part, apart from one person, was 50+. The programme consisted of a couple of weeks coaching, followed by the actual matches which everybody seemed to enjoy immensely.”
Although the course finishes with the finals and presentation on Friday the sessions will continue for 2 more weeks until the end of the season, when the sport moves indoors for the winter. It’s hoped many of those who have taken part in the course this year will have enjoyed it so much they will return and join a local club in time for next season.
Another Return 2 Sport programme currently being held in Gosport is a Return 2 Tennis programme at Brune Park, with the Council also looking at providing a Return 2 Snooker programme in January 2011.
