Mature Movers – Instructor Training!

Gosport, Fareham and Havant Borough Councils are working together to help train instructors to deliver exercise and movement sessions locally, for older people who wish to remain active, mobile and independent.

“Gentle exercise helps the mature person to keep active as well as providing other benefits including an improvement to their posture, mood, sleep patterns, and digestion,” said Carol White, Energy Efficiency Officer for Gosport Borough Council. “And of course we all know that having stronger muscles and flexible joints can help reduce the risk of slips, trips and falls.”

The training is delivered by an experienced and qualified instructor from the Keep Fit Association, and will include a variety of topics and activities such as teaching skills, movement, the ageing process, anatomy and physiology relating to older adults, as well as the Laban syllabus to give you the choreographic skills.

The course costs £200 including all registration, assessment, training, and portfolio costs, and will be delivered 1 day per week for 12 weeks, commencing in January.

If you are a voluntary scheme or organisation wanting to get involved, course costs could be further subsidised.

With only 12 places available (four from each local authority) they will be awarded on a first come first served basis. However, it is essential that potential instructors wishing to access this Mature Movers course to gain a level 3 Certificate in Teaching Movement and Exercise to Older Adults, have already achieved their level 2 in chair based exercise.

Once instructors have completed the training course, they will be supported by their local authority to identify suitable venues to deliver Mature Movers sessions.

TASTER SESSION

If you would like to take part in a taster session, one is being held on Monday 23rd November from 10 - 3.30 pm. The taster session is FREE and will provide a sample of what to expect from the course, an opportunity to meet the trainer, sample an already complete portfolio and meet other potential candidates. Refreshments will be provided, but you should bring your own packed lunch and wear comfortable clothing and footwear.

For further information about this training opportunity or to book your space on the taster session, please contact your local officer Carol White, Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Officer Gosport Borough Council Tel: (023) 9254 5655 or email carol.white@gosport.gov.uk
