Joint Investigation Nets Great Result

A joint investigation between Gosport Borough Council and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has resulted in Mr Noel Morby, (30) formerly of Victoria Street, Gosport, appearing at Fareham Magistrates Court.

Morby pleaded guilty to 3 offences under the Social Security Administration Act 1992, in that he had dishonestly, falsely claimed Housing and Council Tax Benefit and Incapacity Benefit by failing to inform Gosport Borough Council and the DWP that he was working and had vacated the property.

Continuing to claim benefit to which he was not entitled and his failure to report his employment resulted in him receiving a total overpayment of over £2,900.

Morby was sentenced to a 12 month conditional discharge and must also repay the overpayment back to both the DWP and Gosport Borough Council.

“We are delighted that our joint working with the DWP has once again resulted in another successful prosecution,” said Councillor Dave Smith, Leader of Gosport Borough Council.

“We are always here to help people in true and genuine need but it’s important in our fight against fraud that we continue to bring to Court, and ultimately prosecution, those who make fraudulent claims at the public’s expense.”

If you know of someone who is receiving benefit to which they are not entitled, do the right thing and call the 24-hour Benefit Investigation Hotline. If you don’t they’ll continue to get away with it and their fraud will cost YOU money!
