On Sunday 24 June Gosport Borough Council will be holding a combined WWII Commemoration Service and Veterans Day when there will be an opportunity to remember those who lost their lives serving their country as well as celebrating the achievements of our Veterans in today’s society.
The Service, which will begin at 11.30 with an historic flypast (weather permitting), will be taken by The Mayors Chaplain the Reverend Ted Goodyer. The Mayor of Gosport, Councillor Keith Gill and Vice Lord Lieutenant, Nigel Atkinson Esq., DL will be in attendance and The Band and Bugles of the Rifles Band will provide the musical accompaniment for the ceremony.
The Mayor, Councillor Keith Gill will lay the first wreath on behalf of the people of Gosport and this will be followed by the Civic party, Veterans Associations, and Cadets.
Wreaths will also be laid at memorials to the Gosport Civilians killed and to those lost during the First Daylight Raid which involved a Barrage Balloon.
Service Cadets will then lay crosses on each of the 92 Allied and 30 German graves.
This is a particularly moving part of the ceremony as we see youngsters, some only a bit younger than those who died in defence of their country, step forward to lay a cross in memory of those killed,” said the Mayor Councillor Keith Gill. “It also brings home the losses suffered by families in and around Gosport and it is only right that we remember them all on this special occasion.”
The ceremony begins at 11.30am on Sunday 24 June and residents of the Borough and of those lost are welcome to attend.
