This Gender Equality Scheme is designed to ensure the Council is addressing its legal duties and responsibilities under The Equality Act 2006 which prohibits discrimination on the basis of an individual's gender in the delivery of services and employment.
Practices and policies that may appear gender neutral can have significantly different effects on women, men and transgender people. This can lead to gender inequality and disadvantage by perpetuating gender-based stereotypes which can hinder individuals from fulfilling their personal and professional aspirations.
Within its roles as an employer, a provider of a wide range of local services and as a strategic partner working with other organisations in Gosport, the Council is committed to ensuring such disadvantage does not occur.
Results of the consultation with local people, community groups and organisations, and other public authorities were reviewed and considered in preparing the final Gender Equality Scheme which was formally adopted by Council in July 2008.
