Sites in Gosport

The Wildgrounds

The Wildgrounds is largely an acid oakwood, a type of habitat which was formerly widespread on coastal commons in Hampshire.

West of the River Reserves

West of the River contains a variety of interesting habitats, the most important being the reedbed which is one of the largest remaining reedbeds in England. The reed supports a large number of insect species which in turn support birds such as reed and sedge warblers.

Candidate Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation (cSINC)

The Hampshire Biodiversity Information Centre has also identified three additional sites which the Borough Council has named as Candidate SINCs and will treat as SINCs for development control purposes.  These will be proposed as part of the Council’s forthcoming Local Development Framework.

The area comprises of a shingle beach backed by a promenade, sea wall and mown grass embankments.  The site supports a diverse mixture of typical shingle species including Sea Kale and Sea Campion together with several species of sandy shores such as Marram and Sand Couch.  Some of the species found are local or rare in Hampshire.

The cemetery is an area of grassland with some mature planted trees and hedges.  The grassland is herb rich and is largely characterised by grasses and herb species associated with acid soils.

Bastion No. 1 Moat

This lagoon is the moat surrounding the southern and western sides of Seaward Tower, part of the old fortification system at the mouth of Portsmouth Harbour.  There is a good population of the rare Haminoea navicula: Gammarus insensibilis and Corophium insidiosum are also common.  The site has therefore become one of high conservation value.
