Glossary
A Sustainability Appraisal (SA) is a process which aims to test plan and policies options against sustainability objectives which have been agreed for this purpose. This helps to inform choices between them. Sustainability Appraisals are intended to ensure that planning authorities aim to achieve the Government's framework goal of sustainable development in the UK.
The Sustainability Appraisal process has been designed to incorporate the requirements of the European Strategic Environmental Assessment Directive (2001/42/EC which came into effect in the UK in July 2004).
Local Development Framework documents are subject to the sustainability appraisal process. The Gosport Core Strategy document has been subject to sustainability appraisal throughout its preparation and the findings are included in the interim sustainability appraisal.
The Preferred Option version of the Core Strategy is accompanied with an
interim sustainability appraisal report.
It is supported by a scoping report, Sustainability Profile and the sustainability appraisal prepared for the Core Strategy: Issues and Options document.
