Supporting People

What is the Supporting People scheme?

Supporting people is a Government Programme that helps people to live independent lives through housing related support services. It is a grant that, from April 2003, is paid directly to the organisation providing the housing related support service. Contact details are at the bottom of this page.

What are housing related support services?

These are services which develop or maintain an individual’s ability to live independently. For example, a support worker coming to your home to help you:

  • Develop domestic or life skills

  • With your finances or benefit claims

Services that do not count as housing related support services are those such as personal care where you may need help with bathing or administering medication.

Who can Supporting People help?

  • Older people who are frail

  • People with long-term illness

  • People with physical, sensory or learning disabilities

  • People with mental illness

  • Young people under 25 who are at risk

  • People fleeing domestic violence

  • Homeless people needing support

  • Vulnerable lone parents

  • Ex-prisoners or offenders

  • Refugees

  • People who misuse drugs or alcohol
