Pressures and concerns surrounding carbon emissions, costs of fossil fuels and, the security of the supply of fossil fuels have all lead to the introduction of a number of Government policies and strategies relating to the increase use of renewable technologies in the UK e.g. Microgeneration Strategy 2006, Planning White Paper (2007), Energy White Paper (2006), Renewables Obligation, to name but a few.
In particular, micro-generation: small-scale electricity and/or heat generation from a low carbon source situated at or close to the point of consumption would seem to have a significant role to play e.g. solar electric (Photovoltaic), solar water heating, tidal and wind power, and CHP (Combined Heat and Power units). In 2005, a small group of Hampshire Local Authorities including Gosport Borough Council decided to undertake a pilot project to attempt to address the many questions associated with micro-wind turbines for residential properties. The group decided to trial the Windsave 1KW unit and called the pilot 'The Windy Homes Project'.
The following link details the interim results as at September 2007.
