Local election results
Responsible for:
Preparation of the Register of Electors by 1st December and the continuous update of the register throughout the year, including requests for the inspection of the registers.
Administration and management of all elections.
Registers:
An annual canvass is undertaken each year to compile of the register of electors. The canvass commences in September and finishes in October. Two copies of the register are published – the edited register and the full register. The full register contains details of all electors, but its distribution is restricted by statute. The edited register contains details of those persons who did not indicate that they wished to be excluded from it and there is no restriction on the distribution or sale of this register. Both the full and edited versions of the register are available for inspection by members of the public at the Electoral Registration Office.
Elections:
The Borough Council holds scheduled elections on the first Thursday in May of every other year. This commenced in May 2002. Members are elected for a period of four years.
Elections to Hampshire County Council are conducted by the Borough Council's Returning Officer and are held every four years. The County Council election to be held in 2005 will take place on the basis of new electoral divisions arising from a periodic review by the Boundary Committee.
Parliament is elected for a period of up to five years.
The European Parliament is elected for a set period of five years. Proportional representation was introduced for the election held in 1999. Details of the MEP's elected in 2004 can be found at http://www.europarl.org.uk/uk_meps/southeast.asp
