Clinical Waste Collections

For those residents who administer their own home medical treatment, a new system for undertaking clinical waste collections is currently being introduced throughout Hampshire. This new system has been formulated by all local authorities and the Primary Care Trust (PCT) to ensure all collection services comply with recent changes in legislation and will remove the requirement for individual residents to make their own arrangements for this type of waste to be removed from their home.

Since 1 January 2010 it has been the responsibility of your Healthcare Worker/Nurse/Doctor to inform us you require a clinical collection and clearly define your waste. This will be in 1 of 3 categories:

  • sharps

  • infectious

  • offensive waste.

Your Healthcare Worker/Nurse/Doctor will complete a referral form and send it to the Council who will make arrangements to provide a collection service. Those residents with sharps will be provided with a yellow sharps box in which to dispose of their waste. Those with infectious waste will be given orange sacks and those with offensive waste will be given tiger sacks, a yellow sack with a black strip on it. These new coloured sacks are a requirement of the legislation and help to make sure the waste goes into the correct container when collected for disposal.

All local authorities are going through the process of implementing this new system and the PCT are informing their staff and GP surgeries. Therefore your Healthcare Worker/Nurse or Doctors surgery will be aware of the referral form. Without a completed referral from, we will be unable to make arrangements for your clinical waste to be collected.

Please note - if you are treated by a healthcare worker in your own home, it is their responsibility to remove any resulting waste and dispose of this appropriately.
