Due to cuts in funding, in the December 2010 issue of Coastline, Gosport Borough Council requested your views on which services you believe we should give the highest priority. Residents were asked to comment on services the Council provides which are over and above services, such as refuse collection, that we are legally required to provide, and also the cost of providing those services.
After feedback from residents the decision has been made to stop the ‘free’ amenity skips service, as the true cost of this service was over £85,000 per year (not including staff time costs), to collect and dispose of amenity skip waste, which residents paid for through their Council Tax. The service was not considered a high priority by residents and so will cease on 31 March 2011; any remaining slots have now been filled.
There are a number of options for disposing of your large items in Gosport, which are listed below.
Donate your bulky items:
If your bulky items are still usable, why not consider donating them to a local charity to be used again and raise important funds at the same time? Some local charities will collect large items from your home, free of charge. These include Jacobs Well, British Heart Foundation and Sue Ryder. For more information please click here.
Alternatively, why not try listing any usable items on Freecycle or similar sites, or selling them online or at a car boot sale?
Use The Bulky Waste Service or request a Special Collection:
The Council can arrange for the clearance of larger household items following payment of a contribution charge. Please click here for more information.
Visit the Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC):
The HWRC on Grange Road can accept a wide variety of items to be recycled or disposed of correctly. These include furniture, wood and timber, scrap metal, electrical items and other household waste. Please click here for more information.
Hire a skip privately:
Many local companies can provide this service. Why not try looking in the Yellow Pages or searching online?
