Alupro Recycle for Africa Campaign

Each time aluminium is made from the simple re-melt process of recycling - rather than from the raw material, bauxite, this saves 95% of the energy and emissions - so it should become second nature for everyone in Gosport to save aluminium cans for recycling in their kerbside green wheeled bin or local can bank.

What's even better, is that Gosport Borough Council has again teamed up with the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro), a not-for-profit company which represents the leading aluminium packaging producers and reprocessors in the UK. Alupro has promised that a fruit tree will be grown in Africa for every tonne of aluminium cans and foil recycled in the UK. This will help to tackle deforestation in Africa, and the trees will provide good food as well as the basis for fruit drying and juicing enterprises, adding value to the crop as the trees mature. This project will provide the means and know-how for people to develop their own small businesses in rural communities in Malawi.

Trees such as orange and mango, guava and pawpaw will be grown. During the last year, the residents of Gosport have recycled approximately 28 tonnes of aluminium cans, which means that 28 trees are already growing in Malawi due to these efforts! Thank you to all our residents and please keep up the good work!
