Garden Waste Collection

About the service:

To meet the needs of local residents, the Council can collect and dispose of green sacks containing garden waste including:-

  • Grass cuttings

  • Shrub cuttings

  • Leaf fall

  • Exhausted bedding plants; and

  • Unwanted weed growth.

Garden waste collected is used for composting purposes and not disposed of along with your domestic waste. Composting tonnages contribute towards Gosport's overall recycling rate - for this reason green garden sacks which contain black sacks, are too heavy to lift or contain any other item not listed above, will not be collected. Please do not include food waste or soil. The weight limit for your green sack is 13kg - this equates to approximately half a sack of potatoes.

The Council introduced a chargeable kerbside garden waste collection service during 1992 in order to help those residents who are unable to transport green waste to the household waste recycling centre.  Under the Controlled Waste Regulations 1992, garden waste is classified under Schedule 2 (Regulation 4), as a type of waste for which a charge may be made.

How to take part:

Special large, strong green plastic sacks identified with the Council logo can be purchased from main reception at the Town Hall.  From April 2009 these are charged at £1.10 per sack for OAP’s and £1.50 per sack for other residents.

Should a resident be unable to visit the Town Hall and receives assistance with the normal domestic waste collection service a home delivery can be arranged by contacting the Streetscene Section.  A minimum order of 5 green sacks is required for home delivery, if possible, with payment prior to supply.

After a successful trial period, garden sacks will now also be sold at the Lee BOOST events in Lee-on-the-Solent High Street and at selected beat surgeries in Rowner and Bridgemary, once a month, March to October. For more details please contact Streetscene or see below.

Sacks can also sometimes be purchased on a weekend day when the Recycling Team is in attendance at local events.

Once filled the sack must be made visible and available at the front of the property on the nominated collection day, by 7.00am. Please pull the draw string closed when you present your sack for collection. Simply locate your home on the map below then check the index for the appropriate collection day.

Problem with collection?

If your sack has been placed out for collection by 7.00 am but not removed on the nominated day, please contact the Streetscene Section within the following 24 hours.  Providing the collection contractor has not listed any reason for non collection, a request will made for them to return and remove the green sack within 24 hours.

Sales of sacks in Lee-on-the-Solent:

After a successful trial period, green sacks will now be sold at the Lee Boost Events in the methodist church once a month, as this location has proved to be more popular with local residents. Streetscene will no longer be attending the Lee Beat Surgeries on Mondays.

Upcoming dates for Lee Boost are 21 July, 28 August (special Saturday event to co-incide with the Lee Festival - 10.30 until 16.30), 15 September. All Wednesday events are 9am until 12.30pm. Click here for the Recycling Team's events page.

Sales of sacks in Bridgemary & Rowner:

On a trial basis, the Recycling Team will also be attending selected Police Beat Surgeries in Bridgemary and Rowner. Please contact Streetscene for more details.
