Environmental Health Officers Responsibilities

Environmental Health Officers are responsible for the prevention and investigation of certain Infectious Diseases, including all types of food poisoning and other conditions with a public health significance. Certain conditions, such as Campylobactor, are investigated by the Health Protection Agency.

The investigation involves interviewing those suffering with an illness, providing information on how to prevent infection, control measures to prevent the spread of infection in the home, in the community and at work and hygiene tips for the home.

We also organise the taking of food samples and medical samples, tracing contacts of those who are ill, and if necessary the exclusion of food handling staff in commercial premises.

When we investigate Infectious Diseases we are initially told about it by doctors (GP's), hospitals, the patients themselves, the testing laboratory or the Consultant Physician in Health Protection of the Health Protection Agency.
