Walking to Health is a national initiative set up by the British Heart Foundation in conjunction with the Countryside Agency and organised locally by Gosport borough Council. The aim of the scheme is to encourage people to walk in their local area in safety and in the company of others.
Our walks are led by trained volunteers and the routes vary from 30 minute to 90 minute duration. You walk at your own pace and there is time to take in the scenery as you walk, some of our volunteers have specialist knowledge such as history or nature and can tell you a bit about the route and sometimes there is a chance to stop at the end for a cup of tea.
The walks do vary as to the day and time, in the summer some walks are taken in the early evening to avoid the hot weather but in the winter they are obviously earlier when there is daylight. All our walks are free unless we do a special trip to a venue that charges and all we ask is that you wear appropriate footwear and are fit enough to undertake the walk you attend.
Our walks are graded by boots – 1 being the easiest 30 minute walks and 4 being the longest and toughest! This means as you get fitter you can progress to longer and more strenuous walks.
The current programme can be downloaded from the Gosport Borough Council website.
