The Environmental Health Section is responsible for ensuring standards of health and safety are maintained in offices, shops, warehouses, catering premises, care homes and leisure facilities within the Borough.

 

The Commercial Team carries out periodic inspections of premises for which the Council has responsibility.  The frequency of inspection is determined by the risk the business poses.  We also investigate complaints made by employees and members of the public, concerning working conditions and practices. 

 

  • Better business - small businesses campaign - Highlighting to small firms the possible cost savings to be made through good health and safety practice.

  • Health and Safety A - Z of subjects - covers various H&S subjects giving information, checklists, relevant books or leaflets, Health and Safety website links.

  • Health and Safety enforcement policy - This policy provides detailed information relating to the Council's approach to enforcement of the Health and Safety at Work Etc. Act 1974 and all its relevant statutory provisions.

  • Health and safety training course dates for 2011

  • Health and Safety in other languages - If you are looking for information, help or guidance a number of publications have been translated into languages other than English. If you would like to speak to someone in a language other than English, HSE offers a telephone interpreting service.

  • Height Aware campaign -The HSE Height Aware Campaign will take place during May and June 2006. The aim is to help people identify when they are working at height and where they may be at risk of falling

  • HSE advice on working in hot environments - After the winter, everyone looks forward to being in the sunshine, not least of all those who work outside, in often increasingly longer hours of sunlight without realising that they could be literally exposing themselves to danger.

  • Managing Health and Safety at Work - Accidents at work and occupational ill- health are costly to workers and their families and to employers. Management control of health and safety is therefore essential

  • Workplace Hazards - Welcome to this short programme on hazards in the workplace developed by Healthy Working Lives.

  • Reducing noise levels at work - Over 1 million workers in Great Britain are exposed to noise that puts their hearing at risk.

  • Risk assessment - The Management of Health and Safety at Work (MHSW) Regulations 1999 require all employers and self-employed persons to assess the risks to workers and any others who may be affected by their business.

  • Risk Management - Risk management involves the employer looking at risks in the workplace and putting sensible health and safety measures into place to deal with them.

  • Safety at Events - The Event Safety Guide aims to "help those who organise music events so that the events run safely." and "... brings together information needed by event organisers, their contractors and employees to help them satisfy the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 (HSW Act) and associated regulations."

  • Vehicles at work - Every year 70 people are killed and 2000 more are seriously injured in incidents involving vehicles at work. 

  • Vibration at work- Worried about risks from exposure to hand-arm vibration or whole-body vibration? Whether you are an employer, worker, safety representative or specialist, these pages offer helpful advice on how you can reduce and control the risks from hand-arm and whole-body vibration 

  • Watch your step campaign - Do you know the true cost of people slipping up and tripping over?

  • What is Workplace Health Connect? - Workplace Health Connect is a free service set up in partnership with the Health and Safety Executive to provide free, practical advice on workplace health and safety to small amd medium sized businesses.

  • Wiseup2work is- Thi swebsite helps teenagers to think about the risks tahy face at work. Wiseup2work is provided by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) and is an interactive online resource for teachers, youth workers, supervisors and employers to use to prepare young people for work.

  • Workplace H&S responsibilities- The Workplace (Health, Safety & Welfare) Regulations 1992 cover any premises or part of premises (excluding domestic premises) which are made available to any person as a place of work.
