Each year Gosport produces around 26,095 tonnes of household waste and this is continuing to rise. As our quality of life increases we buy more and this creates more waste. Waste minimisation is about avoiding and reducing the waste we create. Why not follow the tips below to ‘slim your bin?’
Stop Junk Mail
Every year 21 billion items (550,000 tonnes) of direct mail is sent to UK addresses. You can stop junk mail by registering with the Mailing Preference Service or by calling 0845 703 4599. If you do not wish to receive Yellow Pages you can opt out by phoning their delivery, ordering and enquiry centre, on 0800 671444.
Compost Your Leftover Food
Around 25% of the food we throw away can be composted. Composting is a great way to use your unwanted kitchen waste. It helps reduce waste and can be turned in to nutrient rich soil for your garden! To buy a compost bin or for more information click here.
Use Real Nappies
Real nappies are easy to use, come in a wide range of colours and styles, and can save you money too! They will also cut your household rubbish by up to half. The Fareham and Gosport Real Nappy Network holds regular events to give you advice and demonstrate available options. Click here for more information, and to request your FREE real nappy guide.
