Building on the award winning success of the 2006/07 Football Frenzy project, Gosport's Housing Services and Gosport Police have secured £21,000 from the Football Foundation Innovation Fund to add to the £21,000 already raised, to pay for the the Gosport Kickz project, which includes a dedicated co-ordinator.
Kickz is a national social inclusion programme aimed at building '
safer, stronger, more respectful communities through the development of young people's potential' by using the power of football and the appeal of professional clubs to offer 11-18 year olds the chance to take part in positive activities. Darren Davies is based at Bridgemary Community Sports College where he is responsible for providing a 48 week programme of twice weekly football sessions in the Bridgemary area. The sessions are delivered by
Pompey in the Community coaches, supported by officers from the local Neighbourhood Policing Team. This is supplemented with a weekly alternative activity session, chosen by the young people themselves.
Kickz also aims to create routes into education and employment by providing volunteering opportunities, study support and accreditation courses. Workshops around healthy living, drug and alcohol awareness and sexual health also help form part of the vision.
The sessions, which started on Wednesday 23rd July, are
FREE and open to
ALL Gosport young people, aged 11-18. They are held at Brune Park School on Wednesdays and Bridgemary Community Sports College on Fridays from 5-6pm for those aged 11-14 and 6-7pm for the 15-18 year olds. If you'd like more information check out the website at
