The Gosport Aviation Society was formed in 1990 by a group of local enthusiasts who had been researching local flying history. During their research, they had given help to both the Air Museum in HMS SULTAN (formerly Grange Field) and the RN Aircraft Yard at Fleetlands. This support included a one month exhibition on the history of Grange Airfield staged at Gosport Museum and assistance in preparing aircraft for RNAY Fleetlands 50th anniversary Open Day. More recently, the Society provided display boards for the D-Day 50th anniversary commemorations in 1994 and produced a major exhibition on the history of aviation at Lee-on-the-Solent in No 2 Battery, Stokes Bay during the summer of 2001. A further exhibition celebrating 100 years of manned flight was held at Gosport Library in 2003. During the two year period from December 2005, the Society had a semi-permanent display of models and artefacts in Gosport Discovery Centre. Currently, the Society in conjunction with Gosport Borough Council is producing an interpretation board to be sited on the 'cliffs' opposite the Fleet Air Arm Memorial in Marine Parade West. In addition, the Society gives talks on aviation topics to local and national groups.

The objective of the Society is to research and record the vast amount of local flying history which covers inter alia, the Royal Flying Corps, the Royal Naval Air Service, the Royal Air Force, the Fleet Air Arm, the Army Air Corps and last but by no means least, the Gosport Aircraft Company.

Membership is open to any person interested in the history of aviation. The Society holds monthly meetings (in Stubbington Snooker Club), organises trips to places with an aviation interest, hosts talks by internationally renowned speakers and in addition to a monthly newsletter, produces an occasional journal on aviation matters of local and national interest.
