This exhibition reveals the work of the many talented artists who live behind the wall of Haslar Immigration Centre in Gosport.

The Big Draw Throughout October, in the Museum on the Mezzanine.
Come and draw an object using pencil, pastel, crayons, or charcoal. Then have your work displayed in the museum.

Queenie and Billikins : a storytime specialWednesday 15 October, 2-2.45pm in the children’s library.
All aboard for a special submarine adventure storytime with Jackie Edelman from the Submarine Museum.
Queenie and Billikins is a real story of two little sea lions that helped to track submarines. The story is interactive, complete with dressing up, puppets and handling museum objects. It will delight all 3 to 5 year olds and their grown ups as well.

Meet top TV writer and children’s author Christopher Russell Friday 17 October, 7.30pm-9pm (approx)
With Midsomer Murders, Cadfael, A Touch of Frost, Inspector Wexford, Eastenders and The Bill to his credit, it comes as no surprise to see Christopher Russell’s alternative career as a children’s author take off.
During this very informal evening, Christopher will talk about his writing and inspiration, and will include clips from some of his work. Suitable for children over 10 and adults. Refreshments provided.

From an Ant’s View – A Big Big Draw.Saturday 18 October, 10am-12 noon, or 1.30-3.30pm at SEARCH museum.
Family art workshop at SEARCH Museum. Draw specimens and artefacts from the collections on a large scale using charcoal, chalk, pastels, pencils and crayons. Exhibit the masterpieces in Gosport Gallery at your own 'private view' the same evening.

Meet the author: James McMurtry Thursday 30 October, 7.30-8.45pm.
James McMurtry's debut novel, Savage Heritage, was published this year. The first in the Imokilly saga set in Ireland, this tells the story of an unexpected inheritance, which leads schoolteacher Orla Shea to a remote valley in County Cork. There, in letters and journals, she discovers a secret family history that inextricably ties her to the savage beauty of the land. As her life unravels, she must learn to trust in fate, believe in love and finally know her true heritage. James will tell us about his inspiration, his writing and his route to publication.

Night in the Museum! Explore SEARCH museum with a torch and enjoy close encounters with nocturnal creatures and strange goings-on in the history rooms. Not for the faint-hearted as ghosts and skeletons may make an appearance. Two FREE sessions – 6pm for families with younger children (4+) and 7.30 for those who can stay up later!

On Land and Sea – the Royal Marines in the First World War

To commemorate the 90th anniversary of the end of WW1, historian Ian Maine will tell the story of the Royal Marines in the Great War, with illustrations and some references to the Portsmouth Division of RM Light Infantry, which was based at Forton Barracks.

Stamping, Shouting and Singing Home A Nuffield Theatre/Forest Forge productionFriday 14 November, 7.30-9.30.
An inspirational and uplifting story set in the Deep South in the 1950s about several generations of a black American family, starring a quartet of black female performers. Screenwriting: The Universal Appeal of Film, with author Craig BattyThursday 20 November, 7.30pm-9pm.
Why do we love films? Discussing topics such as plot, character and theme, screenwriting expert Craig Batty will prompt you to think about the films you love (or hate!) and potential reasons behind this. Clips from various films will be used to illustrate the points being made in this fascinating talk. Craig’s new book Writing for the Screen: Creative and Critical Approaches is published in October.

Mary Rose Day Saturday 22 November, 10am-4pm. Talks for all the family at 11.30am and 2.30pm.
Don’t miss the boat! Drop in and meet characters from King Henry VIII’s ill-fated ship the Mary Rose, which sunk in the Solent in 1545. Handle genuine artefacts from Tudor times. Meet surviving crew members at 11.30am or 2.30pm when they will give a lively talk about their lives, the ship and the disaster. Who knows, you may even meet Henry VIII himself!

Re-arrange our Victorian room sets and artefacts into scenes from the Dickens story. Research who might have owned or used the items and how they were used at Christmas time. Make decorations, play parlour games and dress up as the book characters to create a dramatic tableau. Suitable for families and also for KS4 students studying Dickens texts for GCSE.
